Scawby jets edge to crucial triumph

The battle at the bottom of the Under-17 C and M Alloy saw Scawby Jets burn away Messingham Juniors, 1-0.
Winterton Rangers Juniors inched toward the top of the league with a 4-0 victory over Goxhill. Daniel Lidgett was a marksman on form, netting twice.
Top of the table Midtown United were beaten heavily, 4-1, by Yaddlethorpe as they let their lead at the top slip away.
In the Under-16 Empson division, Trentside Rangers were the biggest winners, 8-2, over Barton Juniors, with Marcus Ladlow netting a hat-trick.
Scotter Juniors won 4-0 at Messingham Juniors, while Limestone Rangers won by the same scoreline over App-Frod Saints.
Broughton Ravers lost 5-3 at home to DEM Gunness.

Fire sprinklers extinguished a fire in a bedroom in an assisted-living facility, limiting fire damage to the room’s mattress, bedding, and wall coverings. However, water damage to the building’s lower floors and electrical system made the facility uninhabitable until repairs were made.
One hundred seventy people lived in the facility, although not all were present at the time of the fire. The four-story building, which was 100 feet (30 meters) long and 100 feet (30 meters) wide, had a two-story basement, hollow tile walls, and a wooden roof with a built-up roof covering. A wet-pipe fire sprinkler system provided full coverage, and a fire alarm system had been installed. A central station alarm company monitored both systems.
Firelighters responding to an automatic flow alarm at 9:24 p.m. found the occupants, who told them sprinklers were operating on the fourth floor, being evacuated independently and with the help of the staff. Fire crews discovered that two fire sprinklers had already extinguished the blaze in the unit of origin, which was occupied by a mentally impaired 80-year-old woman.
Once they confirmed that the fire was out, firefighters shut down the water to the fire sprinklers, but not before water, draining from the fourth floor, damaged the entire building’s electrical distribution system and lighting. The Red Cross and Salvation Army helped transfer the occupants to other facilities or to relatives’ homes until repairs could be made.

On a safety note, I don’t use large turkeys for smoking because they take much longer to reach the proper internal heat of 175 to 180 degrees. Smaller turkeys cook better, faster.
After placing the turkey on the grill, then apply seasoning. Some folks soak their turkey in a brine solution the night before while others coat the inside of the turkey with about one tablespoon of salt. The reason for this is that an unsalted smoked turkey tastes terrible. Yecch! Apply any seasoning you prefer. I use a heavy dusting of lemon pepper, mixing the citrus flavoring with the smoke.
That special aroma of wood smoke is something that is specific to the person smoking the meat. Some folks use hickory, pecan, or fruitwoods in their smokers. Others pour wine in the water pan so that the fumes from the wine will mingle with the smoke, thereby making the turkey more delicious! Try it some time!

Moors boss looking ahead to next season’s challenges

LINCOLN MOORLANDS RAILWAY manager Chris Moyses says Tuesday evening’s superb 1-0 victory at second-top Armthorpe MW has given him food for thought, ahead of next season.
Moyses, who took over the team in February, has steered the Moors to safety in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, thanks, in no small part, to a run of six wins from the last seven games.
Jack McGovern’s seventh-minute strike on Tuesday night was the difference between the teams as a dogged Lincoln side held on for a morale-boosting win.
Moyses is aiming for as high a finish as possible with three games to go, but, as he takes his side to Maltby Main, few would forgive him for already having had thoughts about next season.
“We played probably the best team in the division on Tuesday and we matched them,” said the former Lincoln United assistant manager.
“They put us under the cosh for the final 15 minutes and we had to defend very well at times.
“We have finished the season very well and there is a chance to get out of the division next year.
“With the spirit we have in the side, we should certainly have ambitions for a top-six finish.”
Moyses wasted no time making his mark at Newark Road and within days of his arrival, drafted no fewer than six new faces into the club, including former Lincoln City goalkeeper Ayden Duffy and ex- Lincoln United midfielder Josh Schofield.
He also made Dave Frecklington a permanent part of the Moors’ coaching staff.
“I am more than happy with the squad that I have at the moment, although I do want to strengthen for next year,” Moyses admitted.
“I am sure I can keep hold of all the lads that are here at the moment, although I am sure other clubs are looking at them too.
“But they have a great spirit, are a terrific bunch of lads and I don’t see them going anywhere.
“The likes of Joey Butler, Ben Good and Jack McGovern have been brilliant, while the senior staff at the club have been magnificent “In my opinion, some of the players have turned from boys to men, because this is a tough league to be in, especially if you are losing every week. It is a tough mind-set to get out of.”
One of the challenges facing Moyses, in pre-season, will be his ability to wheel and deal in the transfer market with the smallest of resources.
But he believes his strategy on players, coupled with a drive to attract new sponsorship, could put the Railwaymen on track to attain promotion.
“I want a balance of young players and those that have been around the block a couple of times,” he said.
“The ambition is to finish as high as possible this season and then start rebuilding for next season.
“I will be looking at players from all levels, but I am particularly keen to target those players that live in Lincoln but currently play their football outside of the county.
“I have the same budget as Darren Dye (previous manager) which is nil and I have spoken to the powers that be at the club and told them that there needs to be a budget put in place.
“I would think the target would be to speak to local businesses and set-up a system or a scheme to make them want to become involved in the club.
“But the growth structure is in place at the club, the new changing rooms are being built and everything is looking positive.”
